When Alopecia Turns Ugly

In most cases people with alopecia have patchy hair loss that can sometimes be covered with existing hair, have partial hair added or some of us sport beautiful bald, smooth heads in which we exhibit proudly and fashionably. Then there are some of us who suffer from rare forms of alopecia that produce ugly scarring, scaling, bloody irritating and painful skin conditions. These types of alopecias can come from having what is known as Cicatricial alopecias or "scarring alopecia".

They produce not only scarring on the surface of the scalp but the scarring can occur inside the actual individual hair follicles which block the hair from ever growing through that follicle again. This causes a permanent condition and has to be diagnosed by a dermatologist. Read more about these types of alopecias here.

I was diagnosed with this type of alopecia and it comes with its own set of issues outside of the normal hair loss issues. You can read more about my condition My diagnosis.

Certain types of scarring alopecias are common among African Americans and other people of color. It can also be common to people who wear certain types of tightly braided or tightly pulled hair styles. You can read more about this here: Brownskin.net , What Every Black Woman Needs to Know About Hair Loss .

I listed the symptoms on my page about my diagnosis page listed above. If you suspect you might have scarring alopecia you must be seen by a dermatologist. They will do a physical examination and may do a small biopsy to examine your scalp tissue. There is nothing to be afraid of. Relax and know that you can get through this.
